In the house of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42)

Message by Pr. Eduardo
March, 24th

How was Jesus received in the house of Martha and Mary?

  • Martha was given to the services of the House
  • Mary was more intuitive
Let´s see the text on another perspective

The story is an allegory
  • There are two types of the bride of Christ - the Church
  • There are two types of ministry – the ministers.
  • There are two types of discipleship – the disciples
Martha – (means madam)  verse 38

  • She was named Martha (an assignment) (Named= appointed)
  • Martha = one who has these characteristcs:
  1. Lady of the house
  2. The owner
  3. One that has the power of decision
  4. The leader
  5. The authority
  6. The hostess
  • Let´s think that in the house of Martha Jesus is the guest. (There are things that a guest is not supposed to do.)
  • The anxiety was her food – “She was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.
  • Accusations against her sister – “Don´t you care? Order her to come and help me.”
  • Martha didn´t hear what  Jesus was talking about - she didn´t understand what Jesus spoke.
  • She scrambled from side to side
  • But Jesus said to her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious (worried) and upset about many things…only one thing is needed.”
Mary - from Hebrew = Miriam is a common name = only in the new testament it appears 54 times
  •  A great difference we can see in the English version. She is not named but called.

  • CALLED means = invited. This is a different position.
  • This is a common place among all the disciples who are called (invited ) by the Lord Jesus.
  • We all are called - Jesus is not supposed to be aguest, but to be the  Lord.
  • What Mary heard? I have for you a place at my side.
  • Her testimony was authentic.
  • She corresponded to the voice of her master.
  • Mary has chosen the good part and this will not be taken away from her.
It´s a great privilege to be by His side. Psalm 94:19 - "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
- Many times in our journey we use to be like Martha and not as Mary
- In John 11, during Lazarus’ resurrection, we see deeply different attitudes from them.
Martha – “If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” v.21
Jesus – “Your brother will rise again.”  v.23
Martha – “I know, he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day”. v. 24
Jesus – “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live; even though they die…Do you believe this?"  v. 25,26
Martha - “By this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." v.39
Jesus - "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" v.40
Jesus – “Where have you laid him?”  v. 34
 Mary – “Come and see”  v. 34
Who do you want to act like, Martha or Mary?
It´s up to you to choose. Mary has chosen the good part.
