Emprego dos pronomes reflexivos
a) Como objeto direto ou indireto:
I cut myself.
( Eu me cortei)
You didin´t wash yourself very well.
(você não se lavou muito bem.)
Podem ser opcionais nesses casos em Inglês. Em português, nesses casos não podem ser omitidos. Ex:
I feel ill. ( Eu me sinto doente)
I remember him ( Eu me lembro dele)
You will regret that ( você vai se arrepender disso.)
b) Depois de preposições, quando se referem ao sujeito da frase:
He looked at himself in the mirror
( Ele se olhou no espelho)
They felt proud of themselves.
( Eles se sentiram olgulhosos de si)
I have great confidence in myself.
( Tenho muita confiança em mim mesmo.)
Quando a preposição denota sentido metafórico, o pronome reflexivo se faz necessário:
She was beside herself with anger.
( Ela estava fora de si.)
He was running within himself.
( Ele está correndo dentro de seus limites )
c) Para enfatizar um substantivo ou pronome precedente:
It´s no good complaining to me. You need to tell the manger himself.
(Não adianta reclamar para mim. Você precisa falar com o próprio gerente.)
A expressão by + pronome reflexivo significa “sozinho”.
He did it by himself.
(Ele fez isto sozinho)
They have lived by themselves since their parents died.
(Eles moram sozinhos desde que seus pais morreram.)
Observação:
O pronome indefinido ONE apresenta a forma reflexiva ONESELF, usada principalmente no inglês britânico.:
- One constantly has to remind oneself of the fact.
(È necessário lembrar do fato constantemente)
- No inglês americano, emprega-se HIMSELF nesse caso.
